This is the "rice pounder". Two women step on one end and let the other end fall onto the rice.

The outer brown husk is cracked off, revealing the white rice.

Each batch is pounded for about 10 - 15 minutes. Then, the batch is placed onto a weaved basket ...where the women sift out the husk from the white rice.

This process is repeated several times until all the husks are removed, leaving only white rice.

They did this before every meal!! Starting at 4 am.
