Newsletter from Africa - Cape Town

We flew into Jo-burg and quickly high-tailed it to Cape Town! Cape Town is every bit as beautiful as other travellers have told us. However, all the security bars on the windows and doors are a bit unsettling. We didn't have any problems though. We took the cable car up to Table Mountain and enjoyed some gorgeous views of the city below. Our decision to hike back down was a bit too ambitious ...and we felt it the next day. Hint for anyone that wants to do Table Mountain ... hike up, then take the cable car back down.

We knew we were in Africa when we had springbok and warthog for dinner on our first night ...I'm still not sure what animal a springbok is (but it's tasty!)??!! Everything in South Africa is cheap ...especially now (12 Rand = $1.00 USD)! I apologize to our South African friends for this, but we gotta take advantage of it while it lasts. The wines and champagne are very good and unbelievably cheap! We did a wine tour of the Stellenbosch and Paarl vineyards ...a very fun trip! We toured around the Victoria and Alfred waterfront and took a scenic boat ride around the bay. We met Natasha and Sonya (both from South Africa) on the boat ride and spent a great afternoon talking and eating. We visited the Rhodes Memorial ...which has fantastic views of the city and a pretty decent breakfast (in the Tea Garden).

I think the most beautiful part of Cape Town was the Cape of Good Hope. Even the drive out to the Cape of Good Hope was beautiful ...lots of quaint seaside villages and beaches. The cape itself was a stunning stretch of coastline ...similar to Point Loma - except for the baboons. We knew the baboons were in the park, but we were totally caught off guard when one of them jumped onto the table next to ours during lunch and began grabbing food off of everyone's plates. Those people ended up with a few broken glasses and nothing left for lunch. Needless to say, when our lunch arrived, Lon and I scarfed it down in 60 seconds.
