Newsletter from Africa - Soweto

While in Johannesburg, we took a half day tour of Soweto (South West Township). This area was the segregated "black" area during apartied. It was home to famous activists like Nelson Mandela, Desmund Tutu, and Stephen Biko. Soweto was the scene where many black South Africans fought for their rights and an end to apartied. It was a long and violent period of South Africa's history - and many lost their lives.

Soweto used to be the "slums" of Joburg. Today, it's quite a different neighborhood. While a lot of Soweto is poor, people take pride in their homes and neighborhoods. Even in the shanty towns, people take good care of their property and most have gardens.

Some people might think that taking a tour of the "slums" is demeaning to the people who live there. Actually, it's the only way to see the other part of South Africa ...and the people are very happy to talk with tourists, share their views, and show off their neighborhoods. This tour will leave you with a very different impression of the Soweto "slums".
